Diabetes Supplement
Diabetes is a complex metabolic disorder with excess sugar in blood and urine. Increase blood sugar in diabetes is due to lack of insulin or resistance to insulin. So, diabetes supplement should provide those nutrients to the body that can reduce the blood sugar as well as improve the effect of insulin in body.
Although a family history of diabetes and genetic predisposition are established risk factors, lifestyle factors also play an important role in the etiology of diabetes.
Diabetes also alters the nutritional status of an individual.
Therefore, in the management of diabetes, nutrients play an important role to the pharmaceutical treatment.
Numerous studies have proved the correlations between deficiency of micronutrients and diabetic complications. Micronutrients are nutrients like vitamins and some mineral, which are required in small quantities for various functions of the body.
Diabetes is also associated with an increased production of free radicals in body and a decrease in antioxidant defenses. This leads to oxidative stress, which is partly responsible for diabetic complications.(1)
Diabetes Supplement:
Studies have shown that various nutrients such as chromium, alpha lipoic acid and vanadium play an important role in the management of diabetes.
Chromium:
Diabetes is associated with low concentrations of chromium in blood, so, an early, long-term addition of chromium to the standard therapy has been recommended in several studies.
Chromium increases insulin receptor numbers on cells and insulin binding to cells. It increases insulin efficiency, so lower amount of insulin is required in presence of chromium.
Reduction in blood sugar and improvement in insulin sensitivity with chromium reduces the risk for diabetes complications.
A review article published in Diabetes Technol Ther. 2006 Dec has mentioned that 13 of 15 clinical studies involving a total of 1,690 subjects reported significant improvement in at least one outcome of glycemic control. Chromium supplementation reduced the blood glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels and also reduced requirements for drugs in diabetes.(2)
Vanadium:
Vanadium is a trace mineral (a mineral required by the body in small quantity). It has insulin-like effects in liver, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissues. It may improve glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Alpha lipoic acid:
ALA or alpha lipoic acid is a powerful antioxidant. High blood sugar in diabetes causes increase free radical formation in body, which leads to complications of diabetes like atherosclerosis, heart problems, nerve damage and cataract.
Alpha lipoic acid (antioxidant) decreases free radicals in body and decreases the risk of complications. It also maintains blood glucose metabolism, which helps to maintain blood glucose levels within normal limits.
Fenugreek:
The medicinal qualities of fenugreek seeds have been described in Greek, Latin and Ayurvedic literatures. Fenugreek seeds are rich source of fibre and contain trigonelline , an alkaloid, which reduces blood sugar level.
